CREATING a CORPUS-BASED TEACHING MATERIAL and a LESSON PLAN
A corpus-based lesson plan can be a very useful study material in English language learning. Thanks to this kind of study material, students can make the learning process more permanent by searching with the help of the instructions given by the teacher. This material can also provide a cognitive depth to the process of English language learning because students are involved in the process by searching the given questions or words, they can generate hypotheses by investigating the data they have searched and they can see the natural environment of the words. In addition, this activity offers the opportunity to recognize the collocations of the given words. This kind of activity, of course, brings along some requirements. A technological classroom environment (including computer, smart board) may be necessary for the implementation of the activity.
When designing a corpus-based lesson plan, it is very important to consider more than one factor. Students should be involved in the research process during the activities and should be able to learn inductively and apply what they have learnt. In order to fulfil all these requirements, the activities to be implemented during the lesson should be carefully selected. After such a careful process, the lesson plan should be reviewed and evaluated.
My friends Emir, Emirhan and Hüseyin and I did this assignment as a group. The process of designing the lesson plan was challenging because there were so many factors to consider. Designing activities to meet all these factors involved a creative process. At the end of the activity design and lesson plan design process, we finalized it by making evaluations and necessary arrangements. We also used the CorpusMate website in this process.
The implementation of such a material in the classroom may bring problems. For example, poor internet connection, poor prior knowledge of students about the activities to be carried out may make the implementation of the material difficult.
